The Art of Effortless Playing: Alexander Technique for Musicians in Vancouver

What if playing your instrument could feel more natural, efficient, and free?

Horizon School of Music is excited to welcome Gabriella Minnes Brandes, Ph.D. and George Shindler for The Art of Effortless Playing: Alexander Technique for Musicians, an interactive workshop designed to help musicians explore the connections between movement, breath, sound, body awareness, and intention.

Taking place at Horizon School of Music in Vancouver on Wednesday, October 7 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m., this special workshop is open to musicians interested in developing greater awareness of how they use their bodies while playing and performing.

What Is the Alexander Technique for Musicians?

Musicians spend countless hours developing technique, musicality, timing, tone, and expression. But we don’t always pay the same attention to how our bodies are working while we make music.

The Alexander Technique provides tools for recognizing habitual patterns of movement and unnecessary muscular effort. Rather than prescribing a particular posture or way of playing, it encourages greater awareness and choice.

For musicians, that exploration can include the relationship between breathing, movement, coordination, sound production, physical effort, and musical intention.

Whether you are a singer, guitarist, pianist, drummer, string player, wind player, or another type of musician, greater body awareness can offer a different perspective on how you approach your instrument and your music.

Learn From Experienced Alexander Technique Educators

The workshop will be led by Gabriella Minnes Brandes, Ph.D., a certified Alexander Technique instructor since 1988, alongside George Shindler, a certified Alexander Technique practitioner.

Rather than simply listening to a lecture, participants will take part in an interactive exploration of movement, breath, sound, and awareness.

You’ll discover practical ways to:

  • Recognize habitual movement patterns while playing
  • Reduce unnecessary physical effort
  • Explore the relationship between breathing and sound
  • Develop greater awareness while practising and performing
  • Discover more freedom, efficiency, and choice in your playing

Part of Horizon’s Commitment to Music Education

At Horizon School of Music, we believe that great music lessons involve more than learning notes, scales, chords, and songs. Music education can also help students develop awareness, confidence, creativity, communication, and a deeper understanding of themselves as musicians.

Workshops like The Art of Effortless Playing give our Vancouver music community an opportunity to explore ideas that complement traditional guitar lessons, piano lessons, singing lessons, drum lessons, and other instrumental instruction.

We welcome Horizon students, teachers, local musicians, music educators, performers, and anyone curious about exploring a more conscious approach to making music.
