Kyla Rockingham
Kyla is an experienced and creative drummer, singer and teacher. Her childhood was full of music education; including private lessons in multiple instruments, and a decade spent in the Vancouver Bach Choir, where she performed internationally. At 18 she took up the drums, and performed, toured and recorded with many local bands and theater productions – a highlight being Ghost Light Projects’ Hedwig and the Angry Inch! She has also studied drums at Berklee College of Music.
In 2010, Kyla started volunteering for Girls Rock Camp Vancouver and found her passion for teaching. For many years she taught, organized, and sat on their Board of Directors. She has worked with Empower Through Music since 2018 – teaching drums to underserved youth in the Vancouver School system. She has also worked in film both on and off camera – as a credited drummer, doubling for actors, and as a drumming and band perfomance coach for the Netflix film Mixtape.
Kyla is a supportive and encouraging teacher. She has lots of experience with beginners, children and neurodiverse folk. She knows that musical education is a powerful tool for activism; that we all have the ability to access the language of music, and use it to speak our truth.
